Bretha Déin Chécht

Ancient and Near Eastern Law Codes

Bretha Déin Chécht (Old Irish for "Judgments of Dian Cécht") is an early Irish legal text on the law of illegal injury, detailing the fines due to the injured in a great multitude of cases. The title attributes it to the mythological physician Dian Cécht, a traditional attribution rather than evidence of an actual author. It is the 34th text of the Senchas Már, the major collection of early Irish law. It directly follows Bretha Crólige, a sister-tract on illegal injury, so the two texts together treat the compensation owed for wrongful harm to the person.
