Draco

Draco was an Athenian lawgiver credited with issuing Athens's first written law code around 621 to 620 BCE, replacing the arbitrary oral rulings of aristocratic judges. Reliable biographical detail beyond his role as lawgiver is sparse in the surviving ancient sources. His code was remembered chiefly for its severity, giving rise to the English word draconian, and was almost entirely repealed by Solon's reforms of 594 BCE, which nonetheless preserved Draco's homicide statutes.
