The Kearny Code is a legal code named after General Stephen W. Kearny. It was promulgated in Santa Fe, in present-day New Mexico, on September 22, 1846, for use in the New Mexico Territory, which the United States Army had occupied on August 18 during the Mexican American War. Four days after the promulgation, on September 26, Kearny departed with the guide Kit Carson to take part in the war's Alta California theater.
